Attitude Check – Baby Steps

One of the things that we talk about a lot at Heart of the Matter is the value of taking Baby Steps.  Baby Steps will get you to your goal as long as you keep taking them.  It is when you stop taking them that the problems arise.

Often times to look at the big picture of your organizing goal can be too overwhelming.

Instead, break down your goal.  For example, if you are going to organize your bathroom you would break it down into manageable tasks.

  1.  Medicine cabinet
  2.  Cupboard under the sink
  3.  Weeding through the magazines
  4.  Sorting through the towels & linens
  5.  Checking make-up and toiletries and getting rid of old or unused items

As you train yourself in this concept of Baby Steps, it is a perfect opportunity to make friends with your timer.  In our busy days we seldom have big chunks of time, but smaller bits are easier to find.  Set your timer for 15 minutes and go through your towels and linens for example.  Allow the completion of part of the project to give you a feeling of satisfaction and motivate you to take another baby step again the next day.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed when you look at a big project.  Believe me it happens to us professionals too.  The key is to just start….doing something is better than doing nothing.  I read the suggestion one time to think of this Baby Steps concept as the salami method of organization….you wouldn’t eat a whole salami at one time…..you’d cut it into pieces.  So do the same thing with your big projects!
